Christmas is a special time of year. It is a riotous season that pulls all of the senses into activity: seeing, hearing, tasting, touching and smelling. Nothing can stir up the holiday spirit more quickly than the evocative scents of past Christmases. The sense of smell is the only one of our senses that is wired directly into the brain so that the result is immediate. The brain must interpret the other senses before they can be comprehended.
Essential oils can help to give your holidays a special boost. My favorite scents of Christmas are orange, cinnamon, cloves, cedarwood and fir needle. These can be combined in any variety of combinations to suit your purposes. They can then be put into a diffuser, or a drop into the wax of a burning candle, sprayed out of an atomizer or put into a simmering kettle. It will be the first thing that people notice as they come into the room, warm welcoming smells greeting their noses.
Try this combination in a diffuser:
- 4 drops orange
- 2 drops cinnamon
- 2 drops cloves
- 2 drops cedarwood
- 2 drops fir needle
